U-factor first

In a heating-dominated climate this is the number that shows up on the bill. ENERGY STAR Northern-zone qualification sets the bar.

Warm-edge spacers

A metal spacer conducts cold around the perimeter of the glass and condenses on the inside face. A warm-edge spacer is the single most underrated upgrade here.

Argon or krypton fill

Denser than air, so conduction across the cavity slows. Argon is standard; krypton earns its cost only in narrow cavities.

Low-E coating count

Two coatings beat one in a heating climate, provided the solar gain is not stripped out along with the heat loss.

Frame material and thermal breaks

Vinyl, fiberglass and thermally broken aluminum behave very differently at zero degrees. Fiberglass moves least with temperature.

The install, not the label

An unsealed perimeter defeats every number above it. Air leakage around the frame is the loss homeowners never see quantified.

The Overspecified South-Facing Window

A recurring mistake on Fishers houses: a homeowner is sold a low-solar-gain package across the whole house because it is what the installer stocks.
